Artificial reefs have a positive effect on the ecosystem, because they provide diverse habitats to many different species and foster marine biodiversity. The idea behind artificial reefs is simple: microorganisms colonize the reef, and then lobsters feed on the algae and use the reef as shelter and spawning grounds.

Home’ster’s reefs have relatively rough surfaces; this makes it easier for microfauna and algal cover to attach to the reef as soon as it is installed. Rapid colonization of the reef by animal and algal species is crucial so that it may provide food and shelter to lobsters during all phases of their lifecycle.

Reef specialists use concrete to build these artificial reefs, because concrete becomes a totally inert substance once hardened, is emission-free and will not emit any gases, toxic compounds or volatile organic compounds. The type of concrete used in saltwater is resistant to sulfates and has a long service life. Concrete’s many uses and forms, low carbon footprint and resistance make it a markedly promising solution!
